What is Biological Age?
Biological age differs from chronological age - it measures your body's actual state relative to the population, not the number of years lived. You can be 55 with a biological age of 42, or 40 with a biological age of 52.
The science behind biological age is based on epigenetics - changes in DNA methylation (addition of methyl groups to DNA) that change predictably with age. These patterns change with lifestyle and predict mortality and disease.
Why Does Biological Age Matter?
Biological age predicts mortality, disease, cognitive decline and quality of life better than chronological age. Belsky et al. (PNAS, 2015) showed that documented aging rate can be measured as early as age 26. People with low biological age:
- Live longer and healthier
- Lower risk of heart disease, cancer, dementia
- Respond better to training and supplements
- Recover faster from illness and injury
- Maintain strength, mental clarity and vitality over time
Aging Clocks - 4 Measurement Methods
Not all "biological age calculators" are equal. There are different measurement methods with varying accuracy levels:
Can Biological Age Be Lowered - What Does Science Say?
Yes - but not all interventions are equal. Studies show measurable changes in epigenetic aging clocks after targeted interventions. The highest-impact factors:
5 Highest-Impact Factors:
- Zone 2 Training (highest impact) - 150+ minutes per week. Increases Mitochondrial Biogenesis, lowers VO2max age, impacts methylation. 12 weeks = measurable DunedinPACE improvement.
- Consistent 7-8 hours sleep - Sleep deprivation increases DunedinPACE by 0.1-0.2 per studies. Deep sleep = amyloid clearance + DNA repair.
- Lower HbA1c below 5.4% - Glycation = protein crosslinking = aging. Each 0.1% reduction = significant PhenoAge improvement.
- Lower CRP below 0.5 mg/L - Inflammaging. Omega-3 + Mediterranean diet + Zone 2 = Epigenetic Clock reduction.
- Strength training 2-3×/week - Maintaining muscle mass = higher VO2max = lower biological age. Sarcopenia = aging accelerator.

Key Biological Age Studies
Dunedin Study (n=954 births): Aging pace differs significantly between people already in their twenties. People with higher DunedinPACE looked older, showed early cognitive decline and accelerated aging experience.
DOI: 10.1073/pnas.1506264112 ↗GrimAge surpasses all previous aging clocks for predicting mortality, heart disease and stroke. 5 years of GrimAge Acceleration: HR 1.57 for all-cause mortality. Lifestyle factors (smoking, BMI, activity) explain part of GrimAge.
DOI: 10.1038/s43587-019-0005-3 ↗Levine developed PhenoAge from 9 biomarkers with n=11,432 (NHANES III). PhenoAge predicts all-cause mortality, cancer and cardiovascular disease better than chronological age. Improvable with lifestyle change and remeasurable within 3-6 months.
DOI: 10.18632/aging.101414 ↗DunedinPACE is sensitive to changes within 6-12 months - unlike GrimAge which changes more slowly. DunedinPACE measurements showed changes following: smoking cessation, weight loss, sleep improvement, Zone 2 Training. Best tool for tracking progress.
DOI: 10.7554/eLife.73420 ↗Biological Age Questions
Yes - studies show 3-8 years of measured reduction with a consistent 12-24 week protocol. Zone 2 Training, sleep, nutrition and CRP reduction have the greatest impact. Measurable DunedinPACE reduction is seen after 3-6 months.
PhenoAge is calculated from 9 routine blood tests - accessible and cheap. GrimAge is based on DNA methylation - requires genetic testing (~$200-400) and better predicts mortality. For practical use with monitoring - PhenoAge. For the most accurate picture - GrimAge.
PhenoAge from 9 routine blood tests: 200-400 NIS private. GrimAge (DNA methylation): $200-400, sent to companies like TruMe, Elysium. DunedinPACE: via DNA companies. VO2max estimate: free via our calculator.
Both. There is a genetic "baseline age" that is difficult to change, but research clearly shows lifestyle significantly impacts aging clocks. Smoking increases GrimAge by 4-6 years. Zone 2 Training lowers DunedinPACE. Diet, sleep and supplements - measurable impact.
DunedinPACE measures how fast your body is aging now - not what your biological age is. DunedinPACE = 1.0 is average. 1.2 = 20% faster. 0.8 = 20% slower. Calculated from DNA methylation at 173 CpG sites selected from the Dunedin Cohort study.
Based on existing research: Zone 2 Training has the highest impact on DunedinPACE and VO2max. Consistent sleep - large impact on PhenoAge (via CRP and WBC). Smoking cessation - largest impact on GrimAge.
