Fasting, normal below 100
What it is: The fasting blood sugar level.
Why it matters: Together with insulin, it defines the sugar balance. A high value indicates difficulty in regulation.
Usually from the same sample
What it is: The fasting level of the hormone insulin.
Why it matters: High fasting insulin indicates the body secretes more to maintain the same sugar, an early sign of resistance.
How to improve: Exercise, reducing refined carbs, and sleep. Consult a doctor.
Please enter valid glucose and insulin values.
Common steps to improve insulin sensitivity
Regular aerobic activity throughout the week.
Strength training, muscle consumes glucose and improves sensitivity.
Reducing refined carbs and sugar.
Sufficient sleep and weight management.
These are general research-based steps, not a personal prescription. Consult a doctor before any significant change.
⚠️ HOMA-IR is an estimate and not a diagnosis. Thresholds vary between labs and populations, and the frame colors are general. Interpret the result with a doctor.
A simple measure of insulin resistance, calculated from fasting glucose and insulin. A low value indicates good sensitivity, and a high value indicates resistance. Developed by Matthews and colleagues in 1985.
What is a normal HOMA-IR?
Thresholds vary between labs and populations. A value below 1 is considered excellent sensitivity, up to about 2 is normal, 2 to 3 is elevated, and above 3 usually indicates resistance. Interpret it with a doctor.
Which tests are needed?
Two fasting blood tests: fasting glucose and fasting insulin, usually from the same sample after a fast of 8 to 12 hours.
High HOMA-IR, what now?
A high value is not a diagnosis. It is a starting point for a conversation with a doctor, who may recommend further tests and lifestyle changes.
